Shining a Spotlight on Staff: Laura Hill

Next to step into the ring (quite literally… read on) and the spotlight is Laura Hill, one of our Senior CAD Technicians. She is part of the Design Team here at GRM, which provides our clients with a wide range of services including foundation designs, budget foundation schedules, and structural engineering services such as AIPs, retaining walls, and structural surveys.

Their projects span the length and breadth of the country, but they rarely get the chance to see the finished product that they helped design. And so recently we have given the team the opportunity to accompany our site inspectors to see how foundations are excavated and how their designs are built out.

The main picture shows Laura on one of these site visits: “Having worked at GRM for 17 years and in the CAD department for 15 years it was great to see some of the foundations being dug and the various stages of build. This helped me understand in more detail what we draft for the foundation designs. I have been inhouse trained in CAD over the years at GRM and they have continued to support my training and gain more experience!”

Laura leads a very busy life outside of the office too. She and her children are all very active, with Sky playing rugby (which we covered in an article in 2002: GRM Continues Community Support) and Blu into her skateboarding. The pictures below show Blu taking part in a 24-hour Skate-athon to raise money for the Burton Warehouse Project youth club and skatepark which supports kids with activities and gets them socialising with others (special thanks to the GRM staff for sponsoring her on this!).

Laura herself participated in Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB) and is heavily involved with Burton Boxing Academy: “I did my first boxing fight to raise money for Cancer research. Since then, I have had many more fights and now train and support other women through their UWCB Journey”.

It is very different to Laura’s desk-based day job at GRM, but means she does have the upper-hand (or upper-cut) when it comes to pay negotiations!
