Why might you need a retaining wall?

The primary reason for installing a retaining wall is to restrain soil or other materials across two different elevations. They are most frequently associated with:

• Prevention of soil erosion or natural failure of sloping ground.
• Maximising development potential on sloping ground by the creation of terraces.
• Decorative or landscaping features.

The walls themselves are usually vertical or near-vertical structures that act as a barrier between different soil levels on either side. They may be required as part of a new development or as a remedial action on an existing site that is liable to soil erosion or movement. Planning applications may be required if the retaining wall is over a certain height or next to other existing structures.
