Retaining Wall Design

GRM’s team of structural engineers and CAD experts take great pride in designing the most cost-effective retaining wall solutions for a wide range of clients from private residential developments through to larger commercial and industrial projects. We work to the very latest design codes and have a wealth of experience in all types of retaining walls including gravity, cantilever, embedded and segmental walls.

Why might you need a retaining wall?

The primary reason for installing a retaining wall is to restrain soil or other materials across two different elevations. They are most frequently associated with:

  • Prevention of soil erosion or natural failure of sloping ground.
  • Maximising development potential on sloping ground by the creation of terraces.
  • Decorative or landscaping features.

The walls themselves are usually vertical or near-vertical structures that act as a barrier between different soil levels on either side. They may be required as part of a new development or as a remedial action on an existing site that is liable to soil erosion or movement. Planning applications may be required if the retaining wall is over a certain height or next to other existing structures.
