GRM take great pride in their various annual World Championship activity events, which include tenpin bowling, crazy golf and darts. But this week it was the turn of rounders to take centre stage at Shobnall Fields in Burton, under Mediterranean-like conditions.
After a wash out last year, there was plenty of tension in the air with old rivalries renewed and new ones quickly formed. Several of the ‘more experienced’ team members had clearly not put in the hours and weeks of training, and the balmy conditions soon began to take their toll. Playing to a semi-packed gallery of supporters, family and friends, the match between Team A and Team B (we are nothing if not imaginative) delivered all the drama and tension befitting such an occasion.
Special mention to big hitter Cameron who blazed his way round in his inaugural rounders match and was part of victorious Team A (the final score was a nail biting 23-22), but some brilliant efforts by everyone including the younger family members.
The usual buffet and beverages awaited both teams and their supporters, with tales of ‘what could (and should) have been‘ continuing long into the night. “Just you wait till next year” was the parting cry from one person (who shall remain anonymous), as the curtain fell on another demonstration of the virtues of effort over ability.
