A Phase I Desk Study, also known as a preliminary risk assessment, is often required as part of the planning process.

A Desk Study allied to a site walkover, allows the geotechnical and environmental setting of the site to be determined and highlights areas of particular concern that might require further targeted investigation.

GRM uses industry guidance which includes:

  • CLR 11 – Model Procedures for the Management of Land Contamination.
  • BS 10175 – Investigation of Potentially Contaminated Sites. Code of Practice.

Completion of the desk study allows a preliminary conceptual model to be produced. Further advice is then provided. Typical objectives include:

  • Obtain information, from easily accessible sources, about the soil and groundwater conditions within the area of the site.
  • Determine the possible ground related geotechnical and contamination hazards within the site boundaries that may affect the proposed development.
  • Provide preliminary development recommendations.
  • Provide advice on further works required for the cost-effective reduction of risks to the development and procedures likely to satisfy regulators.
  • Contamination risk assessment.
  • Preliminary geotechnical assessment.
  • Recommendations for Intrusive Ground Investigation (Phase II).
