The catastrophic collapse of a mine shaft can have a serious impact on a developed site. As such un-treated mine shafts have the potential to sterilise large areas of prime development land, thereby reducing viability.

In order to locate recorded mine shafts ground investigation including probe drilling, trial trenching or geophysics is undertaken. Once located the depth, nature and integrity of the backfill will need to be determined by probe drilling.

However, care should be taken as wells and deep boreholes may be mistaken for mine shafts (or vice versa). These are often dealt with in a similar manner.
