A day in the life of a Structural Technician

My work as a Structural Engineering Technician is both challenging and rewarding. I am constantly required to update my skills as GRM's portfolio of work expands to include many diverse business sectors.

My main role is the production of structural detailing for both residential and commercial developments. When a new project arrives, usually in the form of the architect's drawings, I liaise closely with our Structural Engineers and discuss possible engineering solutions. I am pleased to say that they welcome my opinions!

I then produce preliminary structural drawings for consideration by the client / design team. Once all parties are happy with the structural solution proposed, I develop the drawings in parallel with the Structural Engineer's calculations. I often undertake some of the calculations myself under the supervision of a Structural Engineer. GRM encourage this and see it as a vital part of my professional development. As my skill levels and technical ability improve I can see that this area of my work will also increase.

GRM sponsors me to attend a HNC course in Civil Engineering on day release with a view to my eventual progression to Chartered Structural Engineer. There is always something new to learn and GRM offer me their full support to achieve my goals.
